Ukraine begs Australia for its ‘new crush’, another armoured vehicle

In a high-energy video launched on social media on Tuesday, the Ukraine Ministry of Defence pleads with Anthony Albanese to ship over its troopers’ “new crush”, the Hawkei.

Accompanied by the crunching guitars of AC/DC basic Back in Black, the video begins with a “confession”.

“We love armoured vehicles made in Australia,” it says.

“Since our friends Down Under gave us Bushmasters last year our soldiers can’t stop yabbering about how great these rigs are for beating back Russians.”

Australia has despatched dozens of Bushmasters to assist Ukrainian troopers resist Vladimir Putin’s invasion, together with different weapons and help.

“Our soldiers absolutely love Australian Bushmasters. But now they have a new crush: the Hawkei,” the ministry stated, in a tweet.

“These two would be a perfect match on the battlefield.

“We would actually respect their reunion in Ukraine, @AlboMP!”

The Hawkei is named after the largest native Australian snake in the death adder species, Acanthophis hawkei, which is one of the world’s deadliest and itself named for former prime minister Bob Hawke.

Victorian manufacturer Thales says the vehicle provides “class-leading safety and mobility mixed with “payload and power” and is planning to ship 1100 of the automobiles to the Australian Defence Force.

A spokesperson for Defence Minister Richard Marles stated the federal government would proceed to assessment its response to the state of affairs in Ukraine.

“As the Deputy Prime Minister has said, Australia will stand with Ukraine for the duration of this conflict so that Ukraine is in a position to determine the outcome of this conflict on its terms,” they stated, in a press release.

“The Australian government is committed to delivering on its current contribution to Ukraine.”
