Two men die during during half-ironman triathlon race in Ireland

Two males died throughout the swimming portion of an Ironman occasion in Ireland on Sunday, native authorities mentioned.

Cork County Council mentioned it was “deeply saddened over the tragic loss of two race participants” throughout the occasion in Youghal in south-west Ireland.

Irish broadcaster RTE mentioned the 2 males, one in his mid-60s and one in his mid-40s, died in separate incidents throughout the 1.9km swimming portion of the competitors.

The occasion had initially been scheduled for Saturday however was pushed again at some point due to extreme climate situations.

“During the swim portion of Sunday’s race, safety personnel provided immediate medical attention upon recognising the athletes were in need of assistance,” organiser Ironman Ireland mentioned in an announcement on Facebook.

“We share our greatest sympathies with the families and friends of the athletes and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time.
