A “rare and fragile” collection collected by the Australian Antarctic Division are being seen by the general public for the primary time after tons of of pictures, glass plate negatives and lantern slides had been digitised by the National Archives of Australia (NAA).
“The images provide a unique glimpse of the difficult conditions the explorers faced,” NNA course normal Simon Froud stated.
“There are fabulous photos of the unique wildlife, as well as photos depicting the science and technology of the time.”
The photographs, taken between 1901 and 1936, had been primarily captured by English-born Australian pioneer Captain John King Davies and have Antarctic explorers Joseph Kinsey, Ernest Shackleton, Douglas Mawson and Frank Stillwell.
