TAIPEI — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck a largely rural a part of southern Taiwan on Tuesday, the island’s climate bureau stated, with no instant reviews of harm.
The epicenter of the earthquake was Hsingang village in Chiayi county with a depth of 8.5 km (5.3 miles), the climate bureau stated.
The quake was not felt within the capital Taipei.
Taiwan lies close to the junction of two tectonic plates and is vulnerable to earthquakes. — Reuters
