Presumed jihadists abduct about 50 women in Burkina Faso —local sources

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Suspected jihadists have kidnapped roughly 50 girls in insurgency-wracked northern Burkina Faso, native officers and residents informed AFP.

Roughly 40 have been seized a few dozen kilometers southeast of Arbinda on Thursday and about 20 others have been kidnapped on Friday to the north of the city, with some escaping within the meantime, the sources stated on situation of anonymity.

“The women got together to go and gather leaves and wild fruits in the bush because there is nothing left to eat,” stated one of many residents, including that they’d left with their carts on Thursday.

“On Thursday evening, when they didn’t come back, we thought that their carts had had a problem. But three survivors came back to tell us what happened,” stated one other resident.

According to him, the following day, eight kilometers north of Arbinda, about 20 girls who weren’t knowledgeable of the primary abduction, have been in flip taken.

“In both groups, some women managed to escape and returned to the village on foot,” the resident added. “We believe that the kidnappers took them to their bases.”

According to native officers who confirmed the abductions, the military and its civilian auxiliaries have carried out unsuccessful sweeps of the world.

The commune of Arbinda is positioned within the Sahel area of northern Burkina Faso, an space beneath blockade by jihadist teams and with restricted meals provides.
