THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Dutch officers have recognized a single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, generally often called “mad cow disease”, in a cow carcass, the agriculture ministry stated Wednesday.
The animal, an eight-year-old cow, examined optimistic for an “atypical” variant which arises sporadically in animals and is believed to pose much less threat to people, it stated.
It is the primary such case within the Netherlands since 2011.
The contaminated cow “did not enter the food chain and did not pose a risk to food safety,” Agriculture Minister Piet Adema stated.

The atypical variant of BSE sporadically happens in older cows, whereas the traditional kind is unfold when farmers feed cattle with the meat and bone meal of useless and contaminated animals.
