A US man has been attacked by an alligator after opening his entrance door.

Police officers in Daytona Beach in Florida responded to a house on Saturday evening after being notified about an alligator assault.

Police say the resident opened his entrance door after listening to a noise that he thought was somebody in search of his son.

After opening the door, the gator lunged at and bit the person’s higher thigh.

“Went outside and didn’t turn the light on and just got a step outside and something grabbed me on the leg, started shaking violently,” Scott Hollingsworth, the person who was bitten, stated.

He thought it was a canine. It was an alligator.

“Six feet or seven feet (1.8 metres to 2.1 metres),” Hollingsworth stated.

“I really didn’t get a good look at it.

“When I noticed what it was, I stepped again in the home and closed the door.

“Looked down and I had a large gash in the side of my leg. I was trying to put pressure on it.”

The Hollingsworth household says they had been later advised by wildlife officers the alligator was nearer to 9 ft (2.7 metres).
