At least 48 individuals had been killed in a highway accident in Londiani, western Kenya, on Friday night when a lorry carrying a transport container veered off the highway and ploughed into a number of automobiles, police and witnesses stated.
Footage of the accident’s aftermath carried by native broadcasters confirmed the twisted wreckages of automobiles and motorbikes alongside broken minibuses and vans.
Regional police commander Tom Odera stated the demise toll stood at 48 on Friday night.
“I saw a speeding oncoming trailer. I swerved and escaped hitting him head-on. The person who was behind me thought I wanted to buy something. He overtook me and that is when he was hit. The trailer went off the road and hit other vehicles,” stated Peter Otieno, a driver.
“I saw about 20 bodies with my own eyes. There were other bodies that were under the vehicle.
The Kenya Red Cross said the lorry rammed more than six vehicles and ran over pedestrians. More than 20 casualties were taken to local hospitals, the Red Cross said.
“The nation mourns with the households who’ve misplaced family members in a horrific highway accident in Londiani,” Kenyan President William Ruto wrote in a tweet.
“It is distressing that a few of the fatalities are younger individuals with a promising future and business individuals who had been on their day by day chores.”
The accident is among the most threatening on Kenya’s roads lately. Last 12 months 34 individuals died in central Kenya when their bus veered off a bridge and plunged right into a river valley — Reuters
