The loudest roar of the Xbox showcase was saved for Star Wars: Outlaws.
A response the sport’s inventive director, Julian Gerighty says “gave him chills”.
“If you’d told a seven-year-old me I was going to work on Star Wars, it would have blown my mind.
“It’s actually a childhood dream come true.”
Speaking to 9news.com.au in Los Angeles ahead of the Ubisoft Forward, Gerighty distilled his team’s entire design philosophy into a single sentence.
“What would I do if I used to be an outlaw in a galaxy far far-off?
“That is at the heart of all of our decisions of how a player can approach a situation.
“It all begins with what’s the participant fantasy which we need to carry to life?”
That fantasy, is the classic Star Wars scoundrel.
A calling we can experience through a new character Kay Vess and her adorable companion Nix.
With the story set in the one year between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, the empire is at it’s full strength.
It’s a dangerous place for a young woman still trying to find her place in the galaxy.
“We needed to discover one thing extra relatable to a superhero on display,” explained Gerighty.
“Having a protagonist that wasn’t essentially the most assured, wasn’t essentially the most cocky and had quite a bit to be taught however on the finish of the day was tangling with a few of the most harmful syndicates within the galaxy.”
“That takes faking it ’til you make it to a complete new degree.”
“That’s one of many issues I used to be most interested in.”
In a 10-minute gameplay deep dive Ubisoft debuted it was clear that your reputation as an outlaw is everything.
Get caught stealing from a gang? They might refuse to work with you.
Fail to bribe an imperial guard? They’ll send squadrons out to hunt you down.
The impact of these moment to moment decisions was thrilling to see play out on screen, as Kay was chased from a settlement on the moon of Toshara and into space where an imperial fleet was waiting to ambush her.
A pursuit that quickly melded the three pillars of the game’s design: settlements and cities, open world exploration and space.
“[Space] means that you can lean into contracts, smuggling, canine preventing, pirates, the entire issues that carry the wilds of house in Star Wars to life,” said Gerighty.
“You could possibly be going to seek out an improve to your speeder, a ship crashes above you, you go to test it out and possibly there’s some loot there to make use of for one thing else.”
“You’re capable of discover, pushed by your wants, however distracted by curiosity.”
“(By comparability) You have town expertise that is very dense, very wealthy with alternatives with characters to speak to and a central cantina the place you’ll be able to decide up jobs.”
There will be multiple planets in Star Wars Outlaws to visit, but how many remains a mystery.
But central to the story will be Kay’s relationship with her companions, Nix and an ND5 droid with a “very darkish previous.”
“He’s going to be employed to keep watch over Kay they usually’ll develop a bond which is known as a narrative factor,” explained Gerighty.
“We at all times think about the participant controlling each Kay and Nix on the similar time.”
“She can distract with Nix, she will be able to assault with Nix, she will be able to discover secret pathways and activate various things.”
“There’s a number of completely different choices to herald the atmosphere round you.”
Star Wars Outlaws is still about a year away with a 2024 release date on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
And after such a positive showing, Julian Gerighty says his team at Massive “cannot wait to get again and begin ending it up.”
“It’s these moments, the place you begin to reveal it to the world, that give us a lot power.”
“We need to ship an amazing sport, that simply occurs to be Star Wars.”
“That’s the kicker for me.”
Mark Santomartino travelled to LA as a visitor of Ubisoft to conduct interviews with their builders.
