The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) on Monday stated it plans to spice up its efforts in encouraging extra customers to register their SIM playing cards, following the slowdown noticed midway into the implementation of the prescribed registration interval.
“We are almost halfway into the implementation of the SIM registration, and we have observed a slowdown in the number of registrants. Although we anticipated this lull, we are compelled to do more,” stated DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo.
She added that they plan to do that by boosting their info and training campaigns.
Under the SIM Card Registration Act, all public telecommunication entities (PTEs) are mandated to determine their respective registration platforms to onboard customers who current legitimate identification playing cards.
Users are given till April 26, 2023 to register their SIM playing cards or face the danger of getting them deactivated.
The implementing guidelines and rules of the SIM Card Registration Act took impact on December 27, after the measure was signed into regulation by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. final October.
The DICT stated {that a} whole of 32,062,265 SIM playing cards had been registered with their respective PTEs as of 11:59 p.m. on February 12, equal to 18.97% of the 168.977 million SIMs throughout the nation.
“While our telcos are working double time, the DICT and NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) are also reinforcing our support to the telcos,” Lamentillo stated.
