Alcaraz aims for No.1 return without obsessing about it

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, who has simply received his first event again after a four-month damage hiatus, says his purpose this season is to reclaim the No.1 rating.

But he will not make that pursuit an obsession.

“It’s true my goal is to get back to No.1, but I try not to harp on it too much,” the 19-year-old instructed EFE throughout a go to to Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, the place he arrived early Monday to attempt to defend the clay-court title he received final 12 months.

“I do have a very demanding year ahead, in which I’m defending big titles. But they’re nice tournaments I’m looking forward to going back to, and I want to enjoy them. That’s the most important goal,” the winner of final season’s Miami, Madrid and US Open titles mentioned.

With his victory final week on the Argentina Open, a clay-court occasion in Buenos Aires, Alcaraz now has 6480 ATP factors.

That whole nonetheless leaves him nicely behind 35-year-old Serbian all-time nice Novak Djokovic (7070 factors), who wrested away the highest spot from the Spaniard by successful this season’s first grand slam occasion, the Australian Open.

But with a second consecutive title at this week’s Rio Open, Alcaraz would have practically 7000 factors and be nipping on the 22-time slam champion’s heels.

“You don’t know (when Alcaraz will get back to No.1), because it also doesn’t depend exclusively on me,” Alcaraz added.

“It also depends on Djokovic, who’s there fighting. And it also depends on (Stefanos) Tsitsipas (third place with 5940 points) and on many players who are at the top of the sport.

“I’ll give my finest at each event, and we’ll see once I get again (to No.1), that’s, if I do get again there.

“Going four months without training, without competing was very hard, but in Buenos Aires I felt I was already at the same level I was at before and I got better in each match.”
