A counter-attacking half century from Matt Short has saved Victoria from a disastrous first innings tally in opposition to South Australia on day one of many Sheffield Shield match in Melbourne.
On a difficult Junction Oval wicket, Victoria have been bowled out for simply 169 inside two classes in a match between the second and third-placed groups on the Shield ladder.
Short cracked 70 in simply lower than a session in a 69-ball knock that included 10 boundaries.
He was caught behind by Harry Matthias off Ben Manenti in debutant keeper’s maiden firstclass catch, after he’d been flown in from Adelaide on match morning to interchange the unwell Harry Nielsen.
Returning star Glenn Maxwell made simply 5, though his lbw resolution off Jordan Buckingham’s bowling appeared contentious.
Pace bowler Wes Agar starred for the Redbacks, with openers Travis Dean (34) and Marcus Harris (15) amongst his scalps for a return of 5-54.
Victoria received the toss and selected to bat on a wicket that’s extraordinarily inexperienced in some areas and worn in others.
Both groups are coming off Shield wins final week and the winner of this encounter will strengthen their grip on second place with two rounds remaining.
