‘A bit confusing’: Bizarre BBL moment

Confusion and luck was Nic Maddinson’s tackle a weird non-dismissal that punctuated his sensible matchwinning effort for the Melbourne Renegades that he hopes is the beginning of a turnaround for final yr’s wood spooners.

The Renegades captain pounded 87 to elevate his workforce, which has completed final for three-straight seasons, to a vital opening win however solely after he almost walked on 42 when the zing bails dislodged and the stumps lit up after Maddinson performed a pull shot.

As he made his means off the sector, TV replays confirmed that neither his bat, foot nor the ball was chargeable for the bail dislodging, and he was recalled to proceed an innings that could possibly be the beginning of a Renegades resurgence.

“I went to play a pull shot to a slower ball and I was quite deep in the crease. The next minute the bail’s come off and they’ve celebrated,” Maddinson mentioned after the sport.

“It was a bit confusing but I’m lucky I got to stay out there.’’

Maddinson had only faced 26 balls but was 42 at the time of the baffling incident and revealed that being upfront and aggressive was the brand of cricket he was demanding from the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL this summer as the club aimed to rise from the ashes of three-straight wooden spoons.

And the skipper led from the front with a matchwinning and career-best knock in the Renegades’ 22-run win over Brisbane in the tropics of Cairns on Thursday night.

Maddison lived and breathed the key words from Melbourne’s pre-game planning, as he belted 87 off 49 balls with 10 fours and three sixes in his 100th BBL appearance.

The stylish left-hander was a part of the two key partnerships that set up the victory as the Renegades recovered nicely from a 4-13 mid-innings collapse – which included the dismissal of Aaron Finch for four – to set a target of 167 that was a bridge too far for the Heat.

“It’s nice to get off to a good start after the last couple of years. Really pleased with that overall performance,’’ Maddinson said.

“We lost a couple of wickets through the middle, but we wanted to play a really entertaining brand of cricket.

“In our planning the last couple of days, it was about playing a brand of cricket that was upfront and aggressive in all aspects of the game with the bat, with the ball and in the field.’’

Maddinson said he was proud to have reached the 100-game milestone in the BBL, and while he was “pretty pleased with his career-high knock, still felt like he ”left a pair on the market”.

He is very happy to be on the prime of the order for the Gades rather than Australian T20 captain Finch.

“That got here by way of Brad Hodge and David Saker. They‘ve chatted with Finchy (about dropping down to No.4) as a way to attack the spin in the middle overs … being at the top of the order gives me every opportunity,’’ he mentioned.

The Renegades host the Sydney Thunder of their first house recreation at Marvel Stadium this Sunday earlier than internet hosting Brisbane the next Wednesday in Geelong.

Maddison mentioned the new-look Renegades wanted to maintain delivering.

“The new recruits (Akeal Hosein, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Andre Russell) are settling in and we count on loads out of them … they did rather well tonight,’’ he mentioned.
