At simply 12 years outdated, Ava Zempilas has the world in her palms after incomes a State call-up for each basketball and netball.
The passionate younger athlete will compete in School Sports WA’s 2023 championships for basketball later this month after which for netball just a few weeks later.
Ava stated after studying she had been chosen for basketball, she was uncertain she would have time to compete within the netball championships as nicely.
But with the assist of her outstanding mother and father, Amy and City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas, her coaches and teammates and academics at St Hilda’s Anglican School, she determined to offer each a go.
“I’m very proud of my achievements and honoured to play for my State in both sports,” she stated.
“It is taking up a lot of time, but I have other commitments with basketball and netball at a district and association level that keep me busy and keep my skills up.”
Ava — who performs as a small ahead in basketball and in defence for netball — stated she was contemplating a profession as an expert athlete however at this stage was retaining her choices open.
“I’ve always had a passion for sport and getting on the court is something I look forward to,” she stated.
“I love challenging myself and improving my skills, plus it is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.”
Mr Zempilas stated his daughter had been by means of a rigorous course of to earn the picks and whereas there was numerous juggling concerned, each groups have been supportive and versatile.
“The whole family is very proud. Both Amy and I encouraged her to go for it,” he stated.
“To have made two teams in one year is fantastic. The chance to play for both is probably not going to present again in her lifetime, so it’s great she is giving it a go.”
As a veteran sports activities reporter and as a mother or father, Mr Zempilas stated it was nice to see ladies getting the identical alternatives in sports activities as boys.
“The level of professionalism in the coaching and the programs is really impressive,” he stated.
“It reminds me of the opportunities that were once mostly available to boys and it’s good to see more equal opportunities.”
