Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio bared that video games in Okinawa might be transferred to the Philippines in case a hurricane or any unplayable climate disturbances hit the Japanese metropolis come the 2023 FIBA World Cup subsequent week.

Panlilio mentioned FIBA is conscious {that a} hurricane’s path can also cross Japan if it passes the Philippines.

“So worst case scenario, if they cannot play the games in Okinawa, they will move the two groups to the Philippines.” Panlilio shared on Tuesday through the PSA Forum on the Meralco Function Hall.

Aside from the 4 teams to be hosted by the Philippines, Okinawa, alongside Jakarta, will even host two teams specifically Groups E and F on the Okinawa Arena. Groups G and H, in the meantime, might be staged on the Indonesia Arena.

But Panlilio mentioned that Groups E and F might be held within the Philippines within the occasion that the town skilled a hurricane or any climate situation that might declare the video games unplayable.

In this case, the 2 teams might be cut up into the 2 venues in Manila, the Smart Araneta Coliseum and Mall of Asia Arena. The Big Dome will already host Group A and Group B whereas MOA will home Group C and D.

“They would be using the two venues [because] we’re playing at 4:00 and 8:00 so what could happen in the worst case scenario is they will play at 10:00 am and 1 p.m,” the official added.

“That’s the contingency plan.”

Still, Panlilio is hoping that such an occasion will not happen.

“We’re just hoping for the best,” he mentioned.

Group E has Germany, Finland, Australia, and Japan whereas Group F consists of Slovenia, Cape Verde, Georgia, and Venezuela.
