Gilas gains new perspective from Ukrainian player

Gilas Pilipinas obtained some recent perspective in basketball and life basically after listening to from one of many gamers from Ukraine following the Philippines’ 84-74 win of their tuneup on Sunday in Lithuania.

“I thought it was important for us to get the perspective of somebody from another team, most especially a team that’s undergoing extreme adversity [as] we all know what’s going on in Ukraine at the moment,” Gilas coach Chot Reyes stated in an interview posted by the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) on social media.

“I know that the (Gilas) players are starting to miss their families, their kids, their wives. The players are making a lot of sacrifices to be here, they’re starting to feel the aches and pains of the two-a-days, the travel, the cold,” Reyes added.

“Like I said, a very important part of coping with adversity is gratitude and having an appreciation of what you have. For them to find out firsthand from Leo, the player from Ukraine of what they’re going through is important.”

Gilas left the nation final June 22 and has been busy of their preparations for the upcoming 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, to be hosted in Manila. They have confronted groups from Estonia, Finland, and now, the Ukraine Under-20 workforce, whom they’ve performed twice.

“We’re still very grateful and very appreciative that we’re able to do what we’re doing no matter how difficult it is and we have the privilege of representing our country,” he stated.

“When you hear it from the player from Ukraine, for them, the honor of representing the country is on a different level. And I think just getting all those different perspectives is part of the learning process, broadening your knowledge, widening your perspective. Like we always say, it’s more than just basketball.”
