Carlton president Luke Sayers has moved to ease stress on coach Michael Voss, declaring he’ll “absolutely” proceed as coach even when the Blues miss the finals this season.
The assurances got here as veteran and former co-captain Sam Docherty conceded the Blues have been “off the best teams” after dropping 5 of their previous six video games to slide to tenth on the ladder.
Following Sunday’s 28-point loss to ladder leaders Collingwood, Docherty mentioned the Blues, who final performed finals in 2013, needed to entrance as much as their actuality.
“We’re off the best teams. That’s the reality of where we’re at and the reality of what we’ve get to work on,” he mentioned.
“Individually and collectively, the message has got be to have a hard look at our game and get to work on that.”
Fronting the media on Monday morning, a job finished by captain Patrick Cripps final week, Sayers was firmly behind Voss, who’s in his second season in cost and is contracted till the top of 2024.
“Vossy is our coach through to the end of next year,” he mentioned.
“Michael Voss has been a tremendous asset for this football club and we’re looking forward to doing great things with him in the future.”
Voss and Cripps had a heated trade on the bench on the MCG throughout the loss to the Magpies, one thing Sayers was not too involved with.
“We expect all of our leaders of the football club to have very firm conversations with one another when it isn‘t working as we would like,” Sayers mentioned.
“We believe we’ve got the relationships in the club to be able to have those conversations.
“If we weren‘t having those conversations, that would not be ideal.
“I didn‘t see the footage but good on them that they’re having hard conversations about what they can do to do better.”
Ahead of a conflict with injury-depleted Sydney on the SCG this Friday night time, Sayers conceded Carlton needed to get higher, and quick, as a result of the Blues didn’t wish to “fall into finals”.
Carlton hasn’t performed in September for 10 years and can play Melbourne after the Swans.
“We’re not playing good footy at the moment; we’re not happy with where we’re at,” Sayers mentioned.
“We have got to get better. We’re going to get back to work and our goal for this year is finals.
“We did a review 18 months ago and we believe we’ve got the potential here to be playing finals footy and that is our goal for this year.
“We don’t want to fall across the line, we want to impact finals.”
