Mids inside 50 delivery key to unlocking Fyfe: Longmuir

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir concedes there’s “definitely room for improvement” with Nat Fyfe’s opening-round efficiency up ahead, however the supply inside 50 didn’t assist his trigger.

After a robust pre-season in assault, together with three-goal hauls in observe matches towards Port Adelaide and Adelaide, the twin Brownlow medallist was restricted to only one behind from 9 touches in Sunday’s loss to St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.

Longmuir felt the midfield might’ve made life a bit simpler for Fyfe and fellow key forwards Matt Taberner, Josh Treacy (one purpose apiece) and Luke Jackson (no targets) with higher provide.

The Dockers solely managed seven targets for the match, and two after half-time, regardless of main the inside-50 depend 65-53.

“There’s definitely room for improvement,” Longmuir advised 7NEWS Perth about Fyfe’s sport.

“I don’t think he reached the heights he did over the pre-season so there’s a bit of work to do but we can make life a little bit easier for him as well with some of the delivery.

“Put him in the same boat as some of our other key forwards and we need to try and help them out as much as we can.

“The deeper forwards probably didn’t have the connection they would’ve liked or we would’ve liked and there’s plenty of things we can do to help them get into the game and impact the scoreboard a bit more.”

Longmuir highlighted the mid-forward connection as the most important space of enchancment forward of the Dockers’ first dwelling conflict of the season towards North Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Saturday.

“It went wrong in a few spots but I think most of all and the biggest one to come out of the review was the mid-forward connection and making the most of our entries,” he mentioned.

“I think after half-time we had 40 entries for two goals and that’s not going to get it done so we need to tidy that up.”

Fremantle are weighing up whether or not to offer veteran ahead Michael Walters yet another sport within the WAFL after he received via managed minutes for the membership’s affiliate Peel Thunder in a scratch match towards Subiaco in Mandurah on Saturday.

Walters performed about 50 minutes in his return from an Achilles harm, whereas winger Nathan O’Driscoll (foot) received via a full sport.

“We’ll have to have a discussion tomorrow (Wednesday) about Sonny (Walters),” Longmuir mentioned.

“He made a good return in the WAFL but played limited minutes so we’ll discuss tomorrow about his build, whether that’s AFL this week or he needs more minutes (in the WAFL).”

Longmuir mentioned the Dockers will “have to” put work into second-gamer Harry Sheezel after his gorgeous debut for the Kangaroos towards West Coast on Saturday.

Sheezel amassed a game-high 34 possessions off half-back to earn the spherical one Rising Star nomination.

“Based on his performance on the weekend, we’d have to,” Longmuir mentioned.

“We don’t look at age, we look at performance… so we’ll have to put some work into him.”
