Giants back ‘ruthless’ captain Greene

The 29-year-old goalsneak was elevated above his 2022 co-captains Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio to take the mantle alone this season, together with his inaugural skipper Callan Ward saying it was an apparent alternative handy Greene the reins.

“I think the dynamic with Toby as captain is great for our footy club,” Ward stated.

“Toby really deserves it; he’s the guy that everyone wants to lead the football club because of the way he goes about it – the way he trains, the way he plays and how ruthless he is.

“He’s also obviously a gun footballer.”

Ward, who together with Phil Davis led the Giants for his or her first eight seasons, together with of their 2016 preliminary remaining and 2019 grand remaining losses, stated it was “all positive” on the Giants regardless of the numerous change to their management construction.

“In terms of the leadership group and captain, I think we’ve really got it right,” Ward stated.

“Obviously the leadership group is a lot younger than it has been before, which is a really good thing, I think.

“The support for Toby is vital … Cogs (Coniglio) and Josh (Kelly) are really excited for that and really looking forward to helping Toby out.”

Ward stated the Giants “hadn’t done too much” with their newly created rising leaders group but, however that he and Davis have been figuring out how they have been going to run the group.

Brent Daniels, Harry Himmelberg, Lachie Ash and Isaac Cumming have been named as members who could be tutored by the inaugural co-captains, whereas Tom Green, Harry Perryman, Sam Taylor and Connor Idun have been elevated into the management group for the primary time.

“I think Phil and I have both enjoyed working together with the younger boys since we stepped down as captains, and while we were captains as well,” Ward stated.

“We’re really passionate about getting the younger boys to learn things a bit faster and developing their games as quickly as we can.”
