Josh Dunkley has pledged to convey a defensive edge to a Brisbane AFL staff already boasting the attacking aptitude he says can take the “next step”.

Last season’s preliminary finalists have recruited strongly with Western Bulldogs greatest and fairest midfielder Dunkley, Hawthorn ahead Jack Gunston, Ireland’s former Essendon expertise Conor McKenna and father-son draft scoops Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher all linking up on the Gabba.

Asked what he’d convey to the Lions, Dunkley stated a key focus could be on what he does when the aspect does not have the ball.

One of the criticisms of Chris Fagan’s 2022 aspect was their incapacity to defend as soon as they misplaced possession, notably within the midfield.

“The offensive game the Lions have shown has been very exciting, (but) being able to defend as well is very important,” Dunkley advised reporters on Thursday.

“I can bring a little bit of defensive stuff; I’ve always prided myself on that, the tackles, smothers, spoils, getting back to help.

“It’s one thing I’d like to enhance and assist us make that subsequent step.”

Dunkley is a former teammate of Marcus Adams, who is set to miss the 2023 season with a serious concussion.

The key defender was this week moved to the Lions’ inactive list, throwing his AFL future into question.

Dunkley said he’d seen enough to think the club could cover Adams, but felt for the 29-year-old.

“I knew him from the times on the Dogs, been in touch with him and he is a bit upset he is not out right here taking part in however he must take care of himself and do what’s greatest for him,” Dunkley stated.
