Blues stunned by Crows in opening term onslaught

Michael Voss and Carlton had no concept that was coming.

The Blues had been horrible within the first time period on Thursday evening and that ultimately condemned them to their first lack of the AFL season.

Adelaide kicked eight targets to 2 within the opening quarter and whereas Carlton did their greatest to rally, the Crows kicked clear late to win by 56 factors within the 18.10 (118) to 9.8 (62) victory.

Certainly, Carlton’s pre-game was not supreme, with Mitch McGovern dominated out throughout the warm-up due to calf tightness.

But the beginning, particularly on such a giant event, was each coach’s nightmare.

Voss mentioned the Blues had been relishing the prospect to proceed their spectacular begin to the season.

It was a giant event – the opening match of Gather Round, towards one of many host Adelaide groups – and Carlton flopped.

“I thought our preparation was really good. We’ll forensically look at that, just to make sure that it was,” Voss mentioned.

“We were really excited coming here and we were really excited by the opportunity. We understood the challenge.

“The Carlton Football Club just isn’t speaking down the Adelaide Crows, let me inform you.

“So we knew what was coming and we just weren’t able to get the game the way we wanted it early.”

Asked whether or not it was Adelaide’s nice play or Carlton’s poor execution, Voss mentioned it needed to be a mix.

“There was a response … and I’m pleased they stuck that out,” he mentioned.

“But when the whips are cracking, you have to be there at the start and we just weren’t.

“It needs to be a little bit of each. We tip our hat to the opposition, they had been too good.

“We didn’t do the right thing. We didn’t come at the start and at an away venue, at a really important occasion, we were on the back foot.”

Voss mentioned Carlton deserved no matter criticism is levelled at them, with the main target now on making ready for an additional huge check towards St Kilda on April 23.

“Accept what comes our way. We can only go about in the coming week and the next opponent we face,” he mentioned.

One vibrant spot was the spectacular return of midfielder Sam Walsh, who performed his first recreation of the season after being sidelined with a again damage.

But together with McGovern, ruckman Marc Pittonet suffered a lacerated eye and defender Adam Saad has hamstring tightness.

“We’ve started the year in good shape. This was not what we wanted and we’re pretty disappointed,” Voss mentioned.
