Steele underwent surgery and is set to spend at least a month on the sidelines having played through the pain in the final quarter as the Saints defeated the Western Bulldogs to maintain their undefeated start to the season.
“Steeley’s character to play on after breaking his collarbone, his ache tolerance to get again on the sector and provides his all for the staff is nothing in need of outstanding. I don’t know if I may have carried out that,” Wilkie stated on Monday because the Saints put together for the celebration of the membership’s one hundred and fiftieth anniversary towards Essendon.
“He does it year on year, he is incredible. It shows to the young players that you have to fight right to the end. He said after the game he wasn’t feeling too bad, then he showed me the X-ray and it was shattered. I don’t know if he feels any pain, but he inspires everyone with the way he puts his body on the line.”
Wilkie has been one thing of an ironman himself and hasn’t missed a recreation since making his debut within the opening spherical of 2019.
That’s 87 consecutive appearances that can culminate in him main St Kilda towards the Bombers with one more undermanned line-up.
Under new coach Ross Lyons, the Saints took down first Fremantle after which the Bulldogs regardless of lacking a swag of star gamers, together with key forwards Max King and Tim Membrey.
Neither will play towards the Bombers, however Membrey stated it was much less about who wasn’t enjoying and extra about getting the perfect out of who was below Lyon.
“When Ross got here, he set the standards high, real clear game plan and the boys have bought in. It wasn’t about who’s on the field – we’ve had injuries right from the start – it’s about next man and system,” Wilkie stated.
“The ability for the players to buy into that, especially the young boys, and the ability to stay composed in games with the intensity being there, it is a real credit to staying in the moment.
“It (the injury list) is what it is, we can’t control it. The next bloke will come in for Steeley next week. We are probably going to have to wait a little while to get the cavalry back, but that’s OK, this group has done it the last couple of weeks. We can only control what we can control.”
