VP Sara says DepEd’s 2024 budget not enough to solve problems in basic education

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Wednesday stated the proposed  P758 billion finances of the Department of Education (DepEd) for fiscal 12 months 2024 shouldn’t be ample to cater to all of the tasks that might enhance the nation’s primary schooling.

Duterte made the comment in the course of the House committee on appropriations’ listening to when requested by Albay Representative Edcel Lagman if the company’s finances beneath the 2024 National Expenditure Program (NEP) is insufficient to answer its precedence tasks and applications.

“Yes, there is not enough budget to address all the projects and the programs the Department of Education wants to implement to improve basic education in our country,” the Education chief stated.

DepEd, together with its connected companies, is in search of a P758.6 billion finances for 2024. This is 5.1% greater than the company’s finances for this 12 months.

The 1987 Constitution gives that “the State shall assign the highest budgetary priority to education.”

Lagman then requested what can be the ample appropriation for DepEd for subsequent 12 months.

“For the next fiscal year, we requested approximately P900 billion for the budget of the Department of Education. We were approved approximately 700 billion in the National Expenditure Program,” Duterte answered.

She, in the meantime, acknowledged the finances insufficiency throughout all companies, significantly within the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

She stated that DepEd is thus pursuing two tracks to unravel the issues in primary schooling—constructing extra lecture rooms and hiring extra academics, and institutionalizing the blended studying program.

“We intend to address the congestion in the classrooms, the lacking of classrooms, and the shortage of teachers by levering technology and using the asynchronous and synchronous styles of delivery in teaching,” Duterte stated.

“We are trying to innovate in coming up with solutions, considering that we recognize the insufficiency of budgets across all departments,” she added.

The School Year 2023-2024 formally opened in all public colleges nationwide on Tuesday, August 29.

However, one evident downside seen in some colleges is the scarcity in lecture rooms and different college amenities, together with tables and chairs.

DepEd even admitted that there are colleges that also endure from scarcity of academics, however some colleges even have greater than sufficient academics.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
