Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves on Friday stated that the Bureau of Immigration officers had been ordered to “intercept” him upon his arrival from overseas.
In a Facebook video, Teves stated that the order was made even earlier than prices had been filed in opposition to him.
“Ito ay halatang political persecution at pang-aabuso sa aking karapatang pantao,” Teves stated.
In a press release, the BI clarified that the monitoring of inviduals in high-profile instances is a part of their safety protocols.
“The BI wishes to clarify that such instruction is merely a part of the BI’s protocols in monitoring individuals who are subject to high-profile cases. Coordination with local law enforcement agencies is crucial in the proper implementation of BI procedures,” it stated.
“Arresting Filipino nationals is not within the scope of the agency,” the BI added. —NB, GMA Integrated News
