More than 120 firefighters and 30 fireplace vans from a number of stations throughout Sydney battled the blaze.

Acting assistant commissioner Paul Dunstan described the inferno as a “once in decade type of fire”.

The constructing had been vacant for about 12 months whereas deconstruction work was happening.

It was a 100-year-old constructing made out of dry timber that was the “perfect set of conditions for an intense fire”.

Some residents are nonetheless evacuated and diversions are nonetheless in place across the buildings.
