Victorian MP Will Fowles has resigned from the state’s Labor Party over an alleged “serious assault”.
The member for Ringwood stood apart on Saturday after the Premier’s workplace was made conscious of an alleged incident on Thursday.
According to The Herald Sun, Mr Fowles was on the parliamentary bar on Wednesday evening, behaving “unusually”.
In an announcement on Saturday evening, Premier Daniel Andrews mentioned his workplace had made inquiries over the course of Friday and Saturday, and had “received information from a government employee about an alleged serious assault by the Member for Ringwood”.
“My office referred the matter to Victorian Police on Saturday evening,” the assertion mentioned.
“Tonight I also sought and received the Member’s resignation from the parliamentary Labor Party.”
Mr Andrews unhappy Mr Fowles had been, and would proceed to be supported.
“The wellbeing of staff and their right to a safe workplace isn’t negotiable,” he mentioned.
Mr Fowles has not but indicated whether or not he would resign from parliament solely – which might pressure a by election – or stay in his seat.
Mr Fowles was elected to the seat of Ringwood, in jap Melbourne, in 2018.
In 2019, Mr Fowles was questioned by police after he smashed within the backside half of a door whereas at a Canberra resort.
At the time, he mentioned he had been coping with “addiction and other mental health issues”.
He spent two and a half months off work on full pay following the incident.
NCA NewsWire has approached Mr Fowles for remark.
In an announcement, Victoria Police confirmed that they had obtained a referral from the state authorities relating to an assault.
“No official complaint has been received from a victim in relation to the matter,” they mentioned.
“Police have provided contact details should a victim choose to make a report.”
