The laws will arrange a framework for a “truth-telling inquiry” to research painful actions and discriminatory incidents taken towards Indigenous Australians prior to now.
From there, a treaty can start to be negotiated.
That might result in adjustments within the educating of Australia’s colonial historical past in colleges and begin discussions about handing again sacred land or altering names.
But the laws being handed is simply step one to these additional discussions, none of which have been settled.
“(It’s a) milestone today, the last 100 years First Nations people have been fighting for treaty,” Indigenous activist Grace Smallwood stated.
“We want something very concrete and positive for the future of our children and white Australian children so we can all come together in one mob in reconciliation.”
