Pamplona, Negros Oriental Mayor Janice Degamo on Wednesday stated it’s potential that extra suspect-witnesses within the killing of her husband, Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, will recant their testimonies.
“Actually, puwede pa ring mangyari ‘yan,” she informed Unang Balita in an interview. “Talagang powerful ang money. Makapangyarihan ‘yung pera.”
(That can occur. Money is basically highly effective.)
Four suspects have already recanted their statements relating to data on the assassination and pinning Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. and his former bodyguard Marvin Miranda to it.
Teves, who’s overseas, has repeatedly denied involvement within the killing. Despite potential sanctions from the House of Representatives, he refuses to return to the nation, citing threats to his life.
Meanwhile, regardless of the recantations, Mayor Degamo stated she stays hopeful that justice shall be served for the dying of her husband and 9 others, and that peace and order shall be introduced again in Negros Oriental.
“Ang dami ring kaso na nag-recant ang mga witnesses o suspects, pero hindi naman nag-fail dahil ‘yung pinanghahawakan, hindi lang naman ‘yung statements nila,” she stated.
(There had been instances that didn’t fail after the witnesses or the suspects recanted their testimonies as a result of they weren’t primarily based solely on the statements.)
The Department of Justice (DOJ) believes the suspects’ recantations is not going to have an effect on the case. However, it admitted that this is able to have an effect on the suspects’ credibility.
“Sa tingin namin wala naman siyang epekto doon sa kaso, ‘no? Kasi naniniwala kami ang ebidensyang hawak ng department sa ngayon ay matibay,” Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Richard Fadullon stated Tuesday.
(We assume that it does not affect the case. We consider we’ve got robust proof.)
“At kahit na merong umatras o magbago ng kanilang salaysay, hindi ibig sabihin nito na totally masisira yung kaso,” he added.
(And even when they recant their statements, this doesn’t imply that the case is completely destroyed.) —KBK, GMA Integrated News
