Homicide detectives investigate suspected wild mushroom poisoning in Victoria

Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances round a suspected wild mushroom poisoning incident in Victoria after a 3rd particular person died in hospital in a single day.

Four individuals, two males and two ladies, had been rushed to hospital upon falling unwell after consuming lunch at a house in Leongatha, within the state’s Gippsland area, on July 30.

The meal was eaten the day earlier than however medical help was not sought till the next day, Victoria Police stated.

A 66-year-old lady and a 70-year-old lady, each from Korumburra, died in hospital on Friday, whereas a 3rd particular person, a 70-year-old man, died in hospital final night time.

A 68-year-old man stays in hospital.

“Investigators executed a search warrant at a residence in Leongatha yesterday,” police stated.

“Detectives also interviewed a 48-year-old Leongatha woman who was released pending further enquiries.

“The investigation surrounding the precise circumstances of the incident stays ongoing and police are liaising with the Department of Health in relation to the matter.”

The health department said it is investigating the incident.

“The Department is conscious of the scenario and our investigations are ongoing,” a spokesperson told 9news.com.au.

“We prolong our deepest condolences to the sufferers’ household for his or her loss.”

The department said they were concerned about a spike in yellow-staining mushrooms and death cap mushroom numbers, two poisonous varieties.
