Elderly couple rescued for burning Brisbane home after neighbours hear terrified woman’s screams for help

The Indooroopilly property went up in flames at about 11pm yesterday, trapping a lady and her husband, who was nursing a damaged leg sustained previous to the fireplace, inside.

The state of affairs quickly may have confirmed lethal if it weren’t for 2 neighbours who heard the lady’s cries for assist from their very own house and sprung into motion.

It took 14 crews – over 40 firefighters - to finally extinguish the blaze. (9News)

“It was pretty apparent how bad things had got really quickly,” one of many neighbours advised 9News.

“There were embers going all the way up to, at least as high as some of these trees. We didn’t really think twice.

The situation soon could have proven deadly if it weren’t for two neighbours who heard the woman’s cries for help from their own home and sprung into action. (9News)

“We simply went down the aspect, we discovered him there and we simply, yeah, we needed to carry him out.”

It took 14 crews – over 40 firefighters - to eventually extinguish the blaze.

Neighbouring properties were also forcibly evacuated, though the fire was contained before it could spread.

The elderly man was transported to hospital where he is now in a stable condition. 

Police are now working to determine the cause of the blaze.
