Animal hospital investigating the death of much-loved koala
A New South Wales hospital is investigating after a preferred koala named Cathie Bravo died.

The male marsupial, who was a neighborhood of Lake Cathie for 15 years, was discovered lifeless this week.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital mentioned the demise adopted massive a part of his habitat being cleared for growth in August final 12 months.

“Bravo was well known, and residents were upset to see his habitat removed last August,” the hospital mentioned.

”Local extinctions like we’re seeing across Port Macquarie disconnects populations, leading to reduced gene flow and decreased koala health across the region.

“Now greater than ever, each tree is vital to our native koalas.”

The cause of the koala’s death has not been confirmed.

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley said at the time the species’ listing would move from vulnerable to endangered in line with recommendations from the Threatened Species Scientific Committee.

“I’m rising the safety for koalas in NSW, the ACT and Queensland itemizing them as endangered fairly than their earlier designation of weak,” Ley said.

She explained prolonged drought, followed by the Black Summer bushfires of 2019/2020, and impacts of disease and land clearing over the past 20 years have led to a decline in the population.

It’s estimated nearly one-third of the east coast population were lost in the three years from 2018 to 2021.
