‘My angel mum’: Hughesy’s heartbreaking news

Beloved comic and radio host Dave Hughes has shared the news his mum Carmel has handed away.

The 2DAY FM radio host and stand-up legend posted a photograph of his mother and father collectively along with his son Rafferty to his Instagram account on Saturday to announce his “angel mum” had handed away on Friday evening.

“My angel mum Carmel passed last night, at home, surrounded by the love of her family,” he wrote.

“She has earnt the rest.”

Mr Hughes advised listeners to the Hughesy, Ed and Erin present on Friday his mom was in hospital and was unlikely to get up once more.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks,’ he said.

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment.”

He defined the household had been “going through photos” in celebration of Carmel’s life.

“Mum grew up in an orphanage, and there’s a photo of her teaching a class with nuns looking over her … She had to leave the orphanage because she didn’t want to be a teacher, so she left with nothing and went and became a nurse, and met Dad.”

Hughesy misplaced his father, Des Hughes, in 2010 following a battle with most cancers.

Reflecting on his mom’s legacy through the phase on Friday, Hughesy advised his co-hosts: “She’s been a beautiful mother, who really supports her children.”

He went on: “Everyone goes through [losing their parents] … but the memories of all the sacrifice, and all the good times … She’s done so well in her life. We’ll miss her a lot.

“She’s always been stoic and never complained.”

Mr Hughes’ Instagram publish was met with an outpouring of help.

Television presenter Osher Gunsberg wrote: “Big love to you all mate. She raised a champion.”

“Oh Hughesy. Big love my friend,” Sarah Harris posted.

“So sorry for your loss. What a powerhouse of a woman Carmel was. Big love to you and the family,” one other buddy wrote.
