Hollywood star Julia Roberts was presupposed to star within the Oscar-winning blockbuster Shakespeare In Love, it’s been revealed.
US filmmaker Edward Zwick, who performed a key function in making the 1998 romantic interval drama, which streams on Binge, has shared a slightly telling story concerning the mega film star in his upcoming memoir, which was revealed by Air Mail.
He claimed that Roberts, now 55, was locked in to play the lead function that was later handed to Gwyneth Paltrow (who finally received an Oscar for her efficiency).
After signing on, Roberts was decided to get UK actor Daniel Day-Lewis to star reverse her within the movie. When that failed, and when she struggled in rehearsals and chemistry readings, the US actress stepped away from the movie, costing the studio a whopping $US6 million in manufacturing prices.
According to Zwick, Roberts was hooked up to the film early in its improvement, which persuaded Universal Studios to finance the movie.
“The mere possibility of having the Pretty Woman wearing a corsetted gown got the studio excited enough to cough up the dough,” he wrote. But the remainder of the filmmaking course of didn’t go as easily.”
The director claimed Roberts informed him the primary time they met that she already “decided who should play Shakespeare”.
According to his account, the actress turned transfixed with getting Day-Lewis to star reverse her within the movie. Zwick, who already had his personal checklist of actors in thoughts for the function, already knew that Day-Lewis was not accessible, however Roberts was certain she may persuade him.
She reportedly requested for 2 dozen roses to be despatched to the actor, together with a card that learn, “Be my Romeo.”
Zwick defined that it didn’t finish there. He organised a sequence of chemistry readings for Roberts with a “wonderful crop of actors” he met in London that included Colin Firth, Hugh Grant and extra.
But she informed him to cancel that day of casting as a result of Day-Lewis was going to do the film.
The solely chemistry readings Roberts did take part in had been with Ralph Fiennes – which Zwick described as “awkward” – and Paul McGann.
“There was no magic. The problem wasn’t the script. Or Paul McGann. It was Julia,” he mentioned. “From the moment she began to speak it was clear she hadn’t been working on the [British] accent.”
Roberts reportedly flew again to the US very quickly after, as Zwick was unable to come up with her the subsequent day.
The studio had already sunk $US6 million in constructing units, securing places and making costumes.
But with Roberts off the manufacturing, Shakespeare In Love was useless within the water.
That is, till years later, when Paltrow expressed curiosity in taking the lead function, rekindling Miramax and Harvey Weinstein’s curiosity within the film.
Paltrow went on to win a Best Actress Oscar for her efficiency as Viola de Lesseps on the 1999 awards.
Regarding Roberts and her controversial choice to depart the film, Zwick acknowledged that this was a very delicate time for the actress since she was recent off her success in Pretty Woman.
But, he wrote, “I bear her no ill will. She was a frightened 24-year-old.”
Meanwhile, though Paltrow bought the Oscar for her efficiency within the function which initially belonged to Roberts, the actress didn’t go with out. Roberts received the identical award two years later for her titular function in Erin Brockovich.
