After being identified with throat most cancers, the 74-year-old underwent a 12-hour operation with surgeons eradicating a tumour in his mouth and reconstructing his jaw.
Now, Robert says his dad is “cancer free” and “singing again”.
“He’s doing fantastic,” he advised Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington.
“Just the other day he was, you know, walking around with his cane and doing a little bit of a dance, which was pretty fabulous.
“He’s walking with his dog a lot — so he’s really, really happy.”
The proud son went on to say that his dad’s ardour for music had been reignited.
“He’s doing really good, he’s super positive,” he added.

“And, yeah, he’s doing really, really good. So, it’s very, very good to hear him.
“He sings at home again, the whole thing.”
Speaking of the documentary, which airs on Seven and 7Plus at 7.30pm, Robert mentioned his dad hadn’t seen the movie himself and didn’t know what to anticipate.
“No, he still hasn’t seen it,” he mentioned.
“He’s not one to watch himself, you know, on, on TV, or even read reviews.
“He’s just, he’s just not like that — but we’ll make him watch it.”
Wheatley added: “I think he’ll wait till tonight to watch it on Channel Seven. I’m sure he was waiting for it to come on to the television tonight!”
