Singing sensation Perri Hinton is about to attain an American singing dream, overcoming a collapsed left lung resulting from pneumonia as a seven-year-old.
Fast ahead 11 years — the 18-year-old vocalist has packed up her life in Perth and travelled to the opposite facet of the world, staring down the barrel of her huge American dream, with singing to thank.
Offered a spot as a voice principal at Berklee College of Music in Boston — having by no means visited the US earlier than — the budding singer recalled the “ecstatic” feeling that washed over her when she acquired her acceptance letter in March.
Reflecting on the journey that bought her right here, Hinton says, “My lung collapsed, and it was a pretty scary experience”.
“I was super sick, and no one knew what had happened. I got sent to the doctors — I had a super high fever in the 40s and struggled to breathe. The doctor said, ‘You need to take this child to the hospital, or she’s going to die’.
“I remember being terrified … singing really strengthened everything.”
She is worked up about her recent begin.
“I’ll miss my parents and my grandparents… but I feel like it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m going to work really hard because situations like this don’t happen every day,” she says.
“I didn’t have the best time in the last two years of high school, but I’m so excited about pursuing this dream and moving to America. It’s incredible.”
Receiving a merit-based scholarship to the biggest unbiased faculty of up to date music, Hinton hopes to observe within the footsteps of artists corresponding to Charlie Puth, John Mayer and Diana Krall.
“When I finished high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue something in music — so I searched up ‘best music universities in the world’ and Berklee caught my attention,” she says.
“There was an online application process, but the audition was pretty tough.
“I had to perform, sight-sing, improvise and demonstrate musical ability. The wait afterwards was, funnily enough, the hardest part.”
Hinton hopes Berklee can get her one step nearer to her dream of changing into a singer-songwriter.
“I’ve got hundreds of songs that I’ve written, and I think this would be a great place to work on them,” she says.
Influenced by 80s music and impressed by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé, the budding singer has already had a brush with fame — proper right here in Perth.
She has appeared on Telethon twice and been the help act for Gary Puckett, Black Sorrows and Daryl Braithwaite’s Fabulous Caprettos, calling all of them “fantastic” experiences.
Hinton’s mum, Carolyn Carton, flew along with her to Boston to assist her settle in, and although that shall be solely a quick keep, the singer is trying ahead to returning Down Under for Christmas.
She seems to be ahead to reuniting with WA’s heat climate, her canine Sunshine and Delisio’s potato pizza.
