Sydney suburb on alert after plant fire

Residents have been evacuated from buildings in Sydney’s east as a result of an ongoing “major hazmat incident”.

Residents in Banksmeadow have been issued a precautionary evacuation order as a fireplace burns in a chemical manufacturing plant.

At about 6.15am on Tuesday, emergency companies have been referred to as to a producing plant on Denison St after studies of a fault within the cooling tower.

Fire and Rescue NSW arrived to seek out flames about 50m tall coming from the exhaust stacks and rapidly established that workers on the plant had already acted on their emergency shutdown procedures and undertaken a managed burn.

FRNSW was joined by native fireplace crews, a hazmat crew and technical rescue specialists specialising in structural harm in addition to drones.
