Former United States vice chairman Al Gore has heaped reward on the brand new Queensland Premier, after Steven Miles introduced an overhaul of the state’s local weather ambitions.
Within hours of being formally sworn in to be the fortieth premier of the state, simply days after Annastacia Palaszczuk introduced her shock retirement, Mr Miles on Friday unveiled a daring new local weather goal for the state.
In his first press convention as chief, Mr Miles pledged that Queensland would improve its greenhouse fuel emissions goal to 75 per cent by 2035, forward of net-zero by 2050.
The state had beforehand dedicated to lowering emissions by 30 per cent emissions by 2030 – nicely beneath each different state and the federal goal.
Mr Miles stated lifting Queensland’s ambition on local weather motion would “strengthen our economy and create jobs”.
“By legislating this target, we will create certainty for industry and for jobs. By legislating this target, we are making a very clear statement to the world that … Queensland is the place to do business if you’re looking to use clean energy to create prosperity,” he stated.
Mr Gore – one of many main proponents for extra drastic local weather motion – took to X to congratulate Mr Miles on his new position, and praised the announcement.

Mr Miles isn’t any stranger to Mr Gore, having been a 2007 graduate of the previous vice chairman’s local weather management program.
Mr Gore’s Climate Reality Project management program revealed a profile of Mr Miles final yr, writing that in a conservative state stuffed with coal mines, Mr Miles “is one of the very ministers to hold the line on climate change, and continue to advocate for solutions within the Queensland government”.
Mr Mile’s announcement on Friday was welcomed by local weather teams.
