Krejcikova, Ostapenko advance to Birmingham semi-finals

Top seed Barbora Krejcikova has cruised into the Birmingham Classic semi-finals whereas Jelena Ostapenko had a far bumpier street to make the last-four.

Krejcikova eased previous fellow Czech Linda Fruhvirtova 6-3 6-2, with the 2021 French Open champion by no means even dealing with a break level at Edgbaston on Friday.

But Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, needed to rally from a set and 4-0 down to beat Magdalena Frech, of Poland 4-6 7-5 6-2 in an error-strewn quarter-final.

Ostpenko additionally needed to work by a left calf challenge.

“I was thinking at some point maybe I should not continue but there is a fighter inside of me so I want to play until I cannot walk or something,” the Latvian mentioned.

“After winning the second set I felt like I was playing better and my footwork was there.”

Ostapenko will face fourth seed Anastasia Potapova, who thwarted the hopes of Harrier Dart, the final Briton standing, of reaching her first WTA semi-final. Potapova gained 4-6 6-3 6-4.

Krejcikova has a semi-final towards unseeded Zhu Lin, of China, who beat Canada’s Rebecca Marino 4-6 6-3 6-2, full with a blended bag of 10 aces and 7 double faults.
