Watch: Real-life 'Sleeping Beauty' falls asleep for weeks at a time

Body Bizarre introduces viewers to folks with uncommon, mysterious medical situations so unusual that even prime docs and consultants do not know a lot concerning the anomalies.

And in a single episode – which you’ll watch without cost on 9Now – we have been launched to Sharik, a younger teenager affected by an especially uncommon situation which sees her go to sleep for as much as 27 days in a row.

Sharik’s mom Marleny, who lives in Colombia along with her daughter, advised the cameras through the episode: “It was an enormous shock – immediately at some point she simply did not get up.

“I did not know what to do – I dwell with the worry of not understanding when she’s going to go to sleep. I undergo in case she falls asleep on the street. It’s tremendous hectic, it is actually tough for me.”

Sharik added: “I really feel weak and my complete physique hurts from over-sleeping.”

After two years of not knowing the cause of the illness, Sharik’s condition was later diagnosed as Kleine-Levin syndrome.

It causes long bouts of sleep, known as hypersomnia. Some have dubbed the condition “Sleeping Beauty syndrome”.

As Dr Orrin Devinsky defined: “Kleine-Levin syndrome is a neurological dysfunction and is characterised by lengthy intervals – usually days or even weeks at a time – of sleeping episodes.

“The cause is unknown, and we don’t have a clear definite treatment that works for most people. Many times it slowly works itself out over five to 15 years, but unfortunately for some people it can be a life-long disorder.”

The situation has an estimated prevalence of 1 case per million folks.
