Guevarra clarifies ICC situation with Marcos: Appeal still pending

Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra on Thursday stated he has clarified to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that the federal government’s attraction earlier than the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the drug warfare probe continues to be pending.

In March, Marcos stated the Philippines will disengage from any contact and communication with the ICC after he introduced that the federal government’s attraction supposedly “failed.”

“Yes, I have clarified it with PBBM,” Guevarra advised GMA News Online.

According to Guevarra, Marcos directed officers to only await the decision of the attraction.

Guevarra issued the comment when searched for remark over the Department of Foreign Affairs’ refusal to accommodate the Senate panel’s request to ask the ICC to the listening to on resolutions defending former President Rodrigo Duterte from any investigation and prosecution by the tribunal.

The DFA stated the company can not facilitate their request as a result of Marcos’ pronouncement about “disengaging” from the ICC.

In March, the ICC Appeals Chamber rejected the federal government’s attraction to droop the probe on the drug warfare whereas the primary attraction on the choice of the ICC pre-trial chamber to authorize the probe continues to be pending.

The Philippines withdrew from the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, in March 2019, below the management of then-President Rodrigo Duterte. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
