Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated 9 others had been injured, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
The avalanche occurred round noon on Sunday on the Armancette glacier, which is situated close to the village and ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie.
The victims have been backcountry skiers, Emmanuel Coquand, spokesperson for the native authorities of Haute-Savoie, stated.
The avalanche lined a complete space of 1 kilometre by 500 metres at an altitude of 3500 metres.
Coquand stated the trigger is being investigated and the avalanche is believed to have shaped after a slab of snow broke free from the mountain.
Footage shared by Les Contamines-Montjoie resort exhibits the second a wall of snow and ice indifferent and tore down the steep slopes of the Dômes de Miage, which the glacier is part of.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated rescue companies have been persevering with to seek for casualties.
“We’re thinking of (the victims) as well as of their families,” he wrote on Twitter.

Two brothers have been killed by an avalanche on the identical glacier in 2014.
