“I’m not going to act like me and him are friends, I idolise him and every now and then I’ve had a chance to spend time with him and it’s been very memorable for me, but he’s probably forgotten it.

“This is a very intimidating and powerful man, and yet there was this moment where I saw an awe and a reverence, respect and love when he talked about his mother, and it just shocked me, and shame on me for not assuming this was the case.

“And when I heard it I realised right away that this was the story, and it’s a beautiful story.”

When His Airness expressed a want for Davis to fill the function, Affleck scrambled to create a personality that might do justice to somebody he described because the Jordan of actors.

“Her saying yes, which has been a lifelong career ambition of mine – I really have thought I’ll have made it as a director when I have Viola Davis in a movie – had a lot to do with me saying, ‘Michael Jordan wants you to play his mum’,” Affleck laughs.
