A police standoff with a gunman has entered its tenth hour as surrounding residents stay locked inside their houses.
Police rushed to Elphinstone Drive at 8pm on Sunday following reviews a person was armed with a firearm alone inside a Kirwan property, on the outskirts of Townsville in north east Queensland.
The man allegedly fired a number of pictures, hitting the attending officer automobiles and prompting an emergency declaration zone to be declared at about 9pm.
Neighbours have been warned to lock their doorways and keep inside as an exclusion zone stays in place between Dalrymple Road and Golf Links Drive.
“This is for your safety and our safety, you leave the weapons inside” police might be heard talking over a loudspeaker to the gunman in audio launched by The Courier Mail.
“You’ve already fired off some shots tonight, the situation is dangerous.
“We need you to put down the weapons and come out of the house.”
It is known the Ave Tavern on the nook of Kern Brothers Drive additionally stays below lockdown, although it’s unknown if there are patrons inside.
Specialist police and emergency operations have responded to the scene, with the siege ongoing as of 6am native time on Monday.
