AUKUS deal recognises ‘we’re all sovereign countries’

AUKUS Working Group co-chair Joe Courtney says one of many rules of the AUKUS settlement is to recognise “we’re all sovereign countries”.

“I mean, we’re great allies but the command and control of Australian submarines is not going to be under a US officer or a joint command or joint crews, those are going to be Australian submarines,” Mr Courtney informed Sky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen.

“And we’ll have a lot of collaboration but we’re not going to have the sovereignty of the Australian military really compromised in any way.”
