The line to enter the cathedral is already large, with tons of queueing up hours forward of the ultimate mass for Pell.

It stretches far again past the doorways, that are set to open quickly.

One mourner, Teresa, stated she first met Pell whereas doing missionary work years in the past.

“There was a bunch of young people living in a house with mattresses on the floor,” she stated.

“We had to – with our own hands – the cardinal came over and brought out beds and a washing machine.

“Ever since then I’ve appreciated his generosity and his fatherhood.”

Another mourner, Tom, stated he had flown down from Toowoomba to pay respects to “an amazing Christian chief”.

“There have been failings within the church. Protesters have a proper to protest,” he said.

“But we even have the appropriate to precise our respect, and our condolences to the late cardinal.”
