Jail escapee nabbed after Sydney ‘chaos’

An inmate has been taken into custody after escaping from Sydney’s Long Bay Correctional Centre on Monday.

Its understood the person brought about “chaos” all through Sydney’s southern suburbs for about an hour earlier than he was apprehended by police close to Beverly Park at 1.05pm.

In a press release, NSW Police stated a manhunt started after they obtained experiences of a 43-year-old inmate escaping the jail shortly after noon.

“Police have been informed that the man assaulted a woman in her home along Esperance Close, Little Bay, before carjacking a vehicle in the same street and forcing the female driver to drive him to Sydney’s south,” a spokesperson stated.

The car was intercepted close to Battye Ave in Beverly Park, the place officers apprehended the person following a brief foot chase.

The spokesperson stated there have been no experiences of “any person being seriously injured”, with one girl taken to hospital for statement.

Esperance Close in Little Bay is situated simply 2.2km from Long Bay jail.

A NSW Corrective Services spokesman stated the 43-year-old was a minimum-security inmate who went lacking from the “external grounds-maintenance crew”.

“The centre was immediately placed into lock down and specialist escape response officers deployed to patrol the perimeter,” he stated.

“Corrective Services NSW will review the incident.”

The spokesman stated inmates who escape or try to flee are reclassified which prevents them being held in minimum-security services sooner or later.
