Christmas is a ‘very risky’ time in the water

UNSW Water Safety Expert and Researcher Dr Amy Peden says Christmas is a “very risky” time of yr in relation to the water for just a few causes.

“Children aren’t at school and people aren’t at work so there’s increased leisure time or heading to the water to cool off,” she advised Sky News.

“People can be heading on holidays and going to unfamiliar locations as well.

“So, people might be less likely to swim at patrolled locations or know the local conditions.

“Finally, I think one of the real risks is alcohol at this time of year.

“It’s important that if people are going to have a drink that they get all the aquatic activities out of before the way before they have a drink.”
