‘Catastrophic incident’: Richard Marles addresses recovery operation for missing aviators

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has confirmed a restoration operation is underway to seek out the 4 individuals onboard a navy helicopter that ditched into the ocean off the Whitsundays on Friday.

Mr Marles declared there could be an investigation into the “catastrophic incident”.

“With every passing hour it is now clear that any hope of finding Captain Lyon, Lieutenant Nugent, Warrant Officer Laycock, and Corporal Naggs alive has been lost,” Mr Marles mentioned throughout a media convention.

“As such, the nature of the activities which are being undertaken in the Whitsundays have transferred from being ones of search and rescue to an activity of recovery.”
